Respect the Will of the People
By Lisa Corcoran, The Oregonian, June 20, 2006
Letter to the Editor
It is ironic and hypocritical that when a judge determines a popular vote about a hot-button issue is unconstitutional and must be overturned -- such as a ban on gay marriage -- we hear the right wing characterize him as some "activist" subverting the will of the people, imposing his personal views on society with no regard for legal principles.
Yet it seems to matter not to these same rhetoric-mongers that Oregon's Death With Dignity Act is also the will of the people (according to majority vote) and has withstood legal challenges.
Seemingly these folks will not be satisfied until their personal beliefs and religious views are imposed on everybody else in the country. And, it would be nice if people such as Wendy Wright of Concerned Women for America ("GOP puts suicide law in spotlight," June 12) would actually read the act, as her sanctimonious remarks betray a superficial awareness of what is actually involved.
